Shopify Product Image Requirements

The Short Answer
Shopify's Product media types page says: "Your product and collection images can be any size up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels. Product and collection images need to have a file size smaller than 20 MB to be added to Shopify." It adds that "For square product images, a size of 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best."
| Rule | What Shopify says | Shopify's word |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum size | "any size up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels" | "can be" |
| File size | "need to have a file size smaller than 20 MB to be added to Shopify" | "need to" |
| Size that displays best | "For square product images, a size of 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best." | "usually displays best" |
| Aspect ratio | "Between 100:1 and 1:100" | "Files must meet the following requirements" |
| Matching shapes | "you need to use a consistent aspect ratio, or height-to-width ratio, for all the images that you add as your featured, or main, images" | "need to", to make images display the same size |
| File type | "The best file type for most product images is PNG, followed by JPEG. Other accepted file types are TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, and WebP." | "accepted" |
| File names | "Image file names can't end with the following words - pico, icon, thumb, testing, small, compact, medium, large, or grande." | "can't" |
| Minimum size | Not stated | |
| Background | Not stated |
Shopify's pages state no background color, no minimum size, no required aspect ratio beyond the 100:1 to 1:100 range, and no fill percentage. Where this guide says what ComplianceKit does, that is our tool's behavior, not Shopify's rule.
This guide covers:
- Each rule, quoted from Shopify's two help pages
- Where those two pages disagree on file formats
- What the pages don't say
- How to check an image, and how ComplianceKit fixes one for Shopify
Where These Rules Come From
Every rule and quotation here is from two pages in the Shopify Help Center, which we read on October 15, 2026:
- Product media types, the page about images, 3D models and videos on product pages. This is the page for product images.
- Uploading and managing files, the page about the Files section of the Shopify admin. The Product media types page points to it: "For a complete list of requirements and information about uploading files and using the file system in your Shopify store, refer to Uploading and managing files."
Both pages also cover videos and 3D models. This guide is about product images only.
Size: Up to 5000 x 5000, and 2048 x 2048 Displays Best
"Your product and collection images can be any size up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels."
That is a ceiling, not a target. The Files page states the same limit as "Maximum of 25 MP (megapixels)". Shopify's pages give no minimum size for product images.
Megapixels are width times height, so a photo can be a small file and still be over the limit; compressing it does not remove pixels. The free Shopify megapixel checker reads a photo's size in your browser and gives the exact size to resize it to.
Shopify also removes a photo's color profile on upload, so a photo saved in Display P3 (as iPhone photos are), Adobe RGB or CMYK can look different once it is live. The free color profile checker shows which profile a photo has and converts it to sRGB in your browser.
The number to aim for is on the same page:
"High resolution photos look more polished and professional to your customers. For square product images, a size of 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best."
Shopify words this as what "usually displays best", not as a requirement. It applies to square images; the page gives no equivalent number for other shapes.
Shopify also makes smaller copies for you: "When you add an image, different sizes are automatically created for use in different areas of your online store theme." So upload one large image rather than several sizes.
If the store also sells through Google Shopping, Google Merchant Center has its own minimum: from January 31, 2027 it disapproves product images under 500 x 500 pixels. The free Google image size checker checks photos or a list of image links against it in your browser.
File Size: Smaller Than 20 MB
"Product and collection images need to have a file size smaller than 20 MB to be added to Shopify."
This one is firm: "need to" and "to be added to Shopify". The Files page table puts it as "Maximum of 20 MB (megabytes)". To be safe with both wordings, keep each file under 20 MB.
Aspect Ratio: Any Shape in Range, but Keep Main Images Consistent
Shopify requires no particular shape. Its Files page table sets only a range:
"Between 100:1 and 1:100"
That allows anything from a very wide strip to a very tall one. The practical point is on the Product media types page, about collection pages:
"When product images are displayed side by side on collection pages, they have different sizes. To make your images display to be the same size, you need to use a consistent aspect ratio, or height-to-width ratio, for all the images that you add as your featured, or main, images."
So pick one shape for every product's main image and stick to it. Shopify gives one other route: "Themes can also use the Shopify CDN to request consistent sizing for images that might not be saved in the same aspect ratio." Whether yours does depends on your theme, and Shopify's page says "The exact way that images display on your store depends on your online store theme".
File Types: The Two Pages Disagree
The Product media types page, which is the one about product images, lists eight types:
"The best file type for most product images is PNG, followed by JPEG. Other accepted file types are TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, and WebP. Animated versions of GIF and WebP files are also supported."
The file requirements table on the Uploading and managing files page lists five:
"JPEG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC, and GIF"
TIFF, BMP and SVG are on the first list and not the second. We follow the Product media types page for product images, since that is the page about them. If you want a file that satisfies both pages, use PNG or JPEG: they are on both lists, and they are the two Shopify ranks first.
Shopify also converts formats for your customers: "Shopify's Imagery service determines which image formats are supported by your customer's web client, and then automatically displays the image in the best format available."
File Names: Avoid Certain Endings
This is easy to miss and has nothing to do with the picture itself:
"Image file names can't end with the following words - pico, icon, thumb, testing, small, compact, medium, large, or grande. These endings can be misinterpreted as image transformation requests, such as resizing, by Shopify's CDN."
If you do upload one, Shopify renames it: "If you upload an image with a name such as test_medium.png, then Shopify automatically appends a suffix to the filename to prevent conflicts." Names also "must not begin with a period".
The Files page has one more naming tip in the same spirit: "Avoid using underscores immediately before image dimensions in the filename. For example, use product-image-5x4.jpeg instead of product_image_5x4.jpeg."
What Shopify's Pages Don't Say
So you don't go looking for a number that isn't there:
- No background color. Not white, not anything.
- No minimum size. Only a maximum, and 2048 x 2048 as what "usually displays best" for square images.
- No required aspect ratio. Only the 100:1 to 1:100 range, and consistency for main images on collection pages.
- No fill percentage or rule about how much of the frame the product should take up.
- No content rules on these pages about text, logos, borders or watermarks on product images.
So on Shopify the background and the framing are your choice. For the marketplaces that do set rules, see Amazon image requirements, Walmart product image requirements and TikTok Shop product image requirements.
How to Check a Shopify Image
By hand:
- Size: is it no larger than 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels? For a square image, is it 2048 x 2048 or close to it?
- File size: is it smaller than 20 MB?
- Shape: is the aspect ratio between 100:1 and 1:100, and does it match your other main images?
- Format: PNG or JPEG for preference; TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC or WebP are also accepted on the product media page.
- File name: does it avoid ending in pico, icon, thumb, testing, small, compact, medium, large or grande?
With ComplianceKit: open the checker with Shopify selected and upload the image. It checks the photo against the rules Shopify states:
- File size: under 20 MB.
- Resolution: at most 25 megapixels.
- Format: one of the accepted file types.
- Size that displays best: anything smaller than 2048 x 2048 is flagged as below the size Shopify says usually displays best.
How ComplianceKit Fixes an Image for Shopify
ComplianceKit's fix for Shopify outputs a 2048 x 2048 PNG: the square size Shopify says usually displays best, in the file type it calls best for most product images. The product is placed on a white background and fills about 90% of the frame.
The white background and the 90% framing are ComplianceKit's choices, not Shopify rules: Shopify states no background color and no fill. Because every fixed image is the same square shape, it also meets Shopify's advice to use a consistent aspect ratio for main images.

Frequently asked
What size should Shopify product images be?
Shopify says product images can be any size up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels, and that for square product images a size of 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best. Its pages state no minimum size.
What is the maximum file size for Shopify product images?
Shopify's Product media types page says product and collection images need a file size smaller than 20 MB to be added to Shopify. Its file requirements table lists a maximum of 20 MB.
Does Shopify require a white background?
No. Neither of Shopify's image help pages states a background color rule. ComplianceKit's Shopify fix uses white, but that is our choice, not a Shopify requirement.
What aspect ratio should Shopify product images be?
Shopify's file requirements allow an aspect ratio between 100:1 and 1:100. It requires no particular shape, but says to use a consistent aspect ratio for all your featured, or main, images if you want them to display at the same size side by side on collection pages.
What file types does Shopify accept for product images?
The Product media types page says the best file type for most product images is PNG, followed by JPEG, and that TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP are also accepted. The file requirements table on the Uploading and managing files page lists a shorter set: JPEG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC and GIF.
Why did Shopify add a suffix to my image file name?
Shopify says image file names can't end with pico, icon, thumb, testing, small, compact, medium, large or grande, because its CDN can read those endings as resizing requests. If you upload a name such as test_medium.png, Shopify appends a suffix to the file name.
