Shopify image over 25 megapixels?
Shopify limits product images by pixel count as well as file size, so a small file can still be refused. Choose a photo, or type its width and height, to see whether it fits and the exact size to resize it to. Nothing is uploaded: this runs in your browser.

Shopify’s product image limits
Shopify’s help page sets two limits on a product image (Shopify Help Center: Product media types):
“Your product and collection images can be any size up to 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels.”
“Product and collection images need to have a file size smaller than 20 MB to be added to Shopify.”
Megapixels are width times height: a photo 6,000 px wide and 4,000 px tall holds 24 million pixels, or 24 megapixels. File size is how much space the file takes. They are different measurements, and Shopify checks both.
Why compressing the file did not fix it
Compressing a JPEG, or lowering its quality, makes the file smaller. It keeps every pixel, so the megapixel count does not change. A photo that is too big in pixels has to be resized: made fewer pixels wide and tall. Resizing also shrinks the file, so it usually fixes both limits at once.

What size is best for Shopify?
Fitting the limit is not the same as the best size. For square photos Shopify says: “For square product images, a size of 2048 x 2048 px usually displays best.” (Shopify Help Center: Product media types).
